Summer holidays in a bottle

A guide to capturing your beach holiday in a bottle

What do you need?
  • A clear plastic water bottle
  • Some water
  • Blue food colouring
  • Sand
  • Seaweed, small shells and other beach finds
  • Clear oil e.g. baby oil
  • PVA glue
  • Small plastic sea creatures e.g. shark (optional)
  • Funnel
  • Glitter (optional)

As with any activity, they will need an adult to help them

  • How many can do this?
  • Will suit what age?
  • How long does the fun last?

Help kids remember the magic of their summer holiday by showing them how to produce an underwater sea scene, to proudly show on their shelves.

Step 1
Step 1

Wash out your plastic water bottle and fill it half full of water. Add a few drops of blue food colouring for added deep-sea look.

Step 2

Next, get your child to fill your bottle with your seascape items. If you’ve been to a beach then add a small amount of sand. You could even put a couple of pieces of seaweed in. Next add small shells and any plastic sea animals you might have. If you have any glitter then you can also add this to give your sea a sunshine sparkle.

Step 3
Step 3

Use your funnel to carefully fill the rest of the bottle with baby oil, this gives the effect of the separation of the sea and sky.

Step 4
Step 4

Finally, add glue to the rim of bottle and close tightly. Your holiday in a bottle is now complete. Rock and tilt the bottle from side to side and watch the waves roll back and forth. The oil, which won’t have mixed with the water, will create a surging-and-cresting wave effect.
