The water bucket race

A race to move water from one bucket to another using a cup

What do you need?
  • 4 buckets or alternative vessels for holding water (more if more teams are playing)
  • 2 plastic cups or plastic measuring jugs (again more if more teams are playing)

As with any activity, they will need an adult to help them.

  • How many can do this?
  • Will suit what age?
  • How long does the fun last?

A great way to provide an hour of entertainment and giggles during an afternoon in the sun.

Step 1
Step 1

Get the race set up by positioning a bucket of water at the start and an empty bucket at the finish line. You’ll need as many pairs of buckets as there are teams playing.

Step 2
Step 2

Next, organise the children in to teams. Give the first person to go a plastic cup and position the teams in a relay line at the starting point by the first bucket.

Step 3
Step 3

On the word ‘Go’, the first child fills their plastic cup from their bucket at the start line and then races to the other bucket and empties it in. They then race back to the team and the plastic cup is handed on like a relay baton to the next child in the line.

Step 3
Step 4

The race continues in the same way until all of the water has moved from the bucket at the start line to the one at the finish line. The first team to complete the task wins!
